I made a grand return to the Oktoberfest for probs the last time this year because it is slightly ridiculous. However, I saw one of the coolest things of all time. THE FLEA CIRCUS. Yes. These fleas were talented, let me tell you. The best one, Sebastian, could kick soccer balls into a mini goal. There were also ballerina fleas, pushcart fleas, a juggler flea and a carousel flea. Following this splendor, we met up with Honza’s colleagues from university and went first to the Schottenhamel and then to the Paulaner tents. The spectacle of drunken idiots is really something to see. United in doltishness, people sang along to awful pop hits of the 80s and tried to kiss random strangers. I stood there in near-sobriety and wore a gingerbread herz around my neck and felt very wise and old.
The following day we left for Prague on the train. We met some Canadians on the way and I professed my admiration for poutine. On Friday morning Dedeček came by and we drove to Přebuz to the family chalupa. It was wonderful. Honza and I tried to gather mushrooms but only found three. It rained for much of the weekend so we played checkers and Dedeček and honza rocked out on the guitar and accordion and I drank a lot of Fernet and Dedeček made us bryndžove halušký and I think at this point anyone reading this blog is aware that I am having way too much fun using the Czech keyboard. But it is beautiful up there and bursting with history and sometimes I get a little sad the way my own family history has been scattered around the world in a nomadic way instead of rooted to one country. Such is life.
On our return to Prague I went to visit my host family from when I was studying in Prague. they now have a new baby, Rozalíe, who is super cute, and Anna and Ondřej, the older kids, are fifteen and thirteen now and much taller than I. Anna had made me a strawberry kolač and Ondřej made me cheese toast, which was really sweet of them. They have always been such great kids. Kristýna and I talked for a while about life the past several years and Petr came home and I talked to him too. That night, Honza, Kačka and I went to a bar called Propaganda and played foosball which was intense. Today we are going to eat knedliký and go visit Honza’s goddaughter and some other friends.
